Sony has announced a new pair of OLED displays – but expect to dig deep if you want to get your hands on one.
Building on its existing 11in OLED TV, which remains the only commercially available OLED TV on the market, Sony has created the Trimaster EL series of ‘reference’ monitors for the film and broadcast markets.
Measuring 17in and 25in respectively, the two launch models harness OLED technology to offer much more accurate colour reproduction and far higher contrast ratios than is possible with traditional TFT or IPS displays while avoiding the geometric distortion that exists with even the flattest of CRT monitors.
Sadly, the technology hasn’t taken off on a large scale. While common in smartphones – especially from Samsung, one of the pioneers of small-screen OLED technology with its AMOLED series – larger displays are few and far between.
Both models come equipped with HDMI, DisplayPort, 3G-SDI, SD-SDI, and HD-SDI connections – the latter three of which are in common use in the broadcast industry – and feature a new colour management technology that Sony claims provides increased performance over existing solutions. Both the 17in and 25in versions include a full-HD 1080p OLED panel.
Sadly, Sony’s definitely aiming at the professional market with this latest launch: so far only available in Japan, the new Trimaster EL displays are set to cost 1.3 million (around £9,600) and 2.5 million (around £18,500) respectively when they launch in May this year.
